Arizona State Men’s Lacrosse head coach Justin Straker steps down following strong 2025 campaign
Tempe, AZ — After four years of dedicated leadership, Arizona State University head lacrosse coach, Justin Straker, has announced his decision to step down from his role. Coach Straker has been an integral part of the Sun Devils lacrosse program, with involvement dating back to 2011.
Straker began his career with ASU as a student-athlete, representing the Sun Devils from 2011 to 2014, and later served as a graduate assistant in 2015 before earning his master’s degree from the University of Tennessee.
Following a challenging period for the program, Arizona State welcomed Straker back as head coach in 2021. Viewing the opportunity as a chance to revitalize the team culture and reestablish a foundation for success, Straker committed himself to rebuilding the program from the ground up in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic — starting with a returning roster of just four players.
He led the program through four competitive and resilient seasons, compiling an overall record of 40-23 and never posting a losing season. Under his leadership, the team qualified for the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference (SLC) playoffs three times and earned back-to-back appearances in the MCLA National Tournament as a top 10–ranked team during his final two years at the helm.
The 2025 season was highlighted by a conference title run, as the Sun Devils captured the SLC Championship for the first time since 2014 — a meaningful milestone, as Straker was a player on that last title-winning team.
Reflecting on his time with the program, Coach Straker shared:
"Arizona State Lacrosse has been a central part of my life for more than a decade. I could not have asked for a better experience in balancing life and lacrosse. This program and university have the power to positively transform lives, and they have done so for me and my family.
Over the past 14 years, I’ve been fortunate to experience countless opportunities as both a player and a coach. I’ve created lasting memories and have had the privilege of mentoring remarkable student-athletes. I look forward to seeing what they accomplish in the future. The MCLA experience will always be about the student-athlete, and we’ve worked hard to ensure that our players at ASU fully benefit from all the university has to offer."
Arizona State Lacrosse Advisory Board President, Nick Hillier, expressed his gratitude for Coach Straker’s impact, stating:
“We are thankful for everything Coach Straker has done for the program. Rebuilding the team from where it was in 2021 to where it is now is a testament to his dedication and love for ASU lacrosse. We’re looking for a new head coach who will continue to build on that culture — one that values hard work, commitment, and being the best you can be on and off the field.”
A search for a new head coach begins immediately. The team will be accepting resumes through May 25, 2025. Interested candidates should email admin@asulacrosse.com with a resume and references provided.
